“The balloon seems to stand still in the air while the earth flies past underneath.” — Alberto Santos-Dumont.

There is nothing quite like the uplifting sensation of a balloon ride. The gentle sway of the balloon borne upon the winds, with a panorama, a bird’s eye view of the surroundings is an amazing experience. The 360 degree field of vision and the weightless sensation of being lifted off your feet up to heights of 2500 feet, can only be experienced in a hot air balloon.

A fantastic way to experience flight, and a great adventure that is not in the least bit physically demanding, hot air balloon rides are now available to tourists in Goa.

History
Balloons are the first method of flight created by man. Invented in 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers, the first manned balloon flight took place in Paris, France. However, long before this, in 220AD, unmanned balloons were used in China for military purposes.

Modern hot air balloons were invented in the 1950’s by Ed Yost. Today, they are used mainly for recreational purposes.

Mechanics
The balloon, or envelope, which is made up of strips of fabric that have been sewn together along with vertical load tapes, is inflated and filled with hot air. Attached to the bottom, open end of the envelope, is a wicker basket that can seat upto 12 people.

The balloon is controlled by the pilot with the help of a propane fuelled burner. The amount of hot air in the envelope determines the rate of ascent and descent.

Hot Air Ballooning in Goa
In Goa, the government of Goa has collaborated with Tiger Balloon Safaris to provide tourists with the optimum ballooning experience. Balloon rides are usually held in the mornings and evenings, in order to avoid the uncomfortable afternoon heat and give the guests a great experience.

This experience, besides allowing for a brilliant balloon ride also offers the guests a chance to help with the inflation of the balloon. The pilot will talk you through the mechanics of the process as well. Balloon rides make for great photo ops thanks to the brilliant 360 degree view from the basket.

Hot air ballooning is a great way to see more of the lush Goan countryside, as well as an exciting activity that does not require any particular athletic prowess. Sunrise flights are also a great favourite as romantic couple getaways, offering spectacular and panoramic views of a fiery Goan sun-up.

Trivia
