1.5 ton Bananas seized on suspicion of chemical ripening; godown owner breaks FDA seal, flees with stock

Digital Goa, June 10 – The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) had sealed a rented godown in Mapusa after seizing around 1.5 tonnes of bananas on suspicion that they were chemically ripened. However, in a serious violation, the stock owner allegedly broke the official seal, loaded the seized bananas into a tempo, and fled the premises. FDA officials revealed that the accused illegally transported the bananas to his brother’s shop at the Panaji bus stand. FDA tracked the consignment and destroyed the recovered stock. The godown owner has been detained and will be handed over to the police for further action. The FDA had been awaiting test results to confirm the suspected use of ripening chemicals when the breach occurred.
