Digital Goa, Jan 6 – Supreme Court has dismissed the Special Leave Petition filed by 4 accused in the sensational August 2006 Mandar Surlakar murder case seeking their release from jail by including period of parole, furlough etc while considering the term of 14 years of their actual imprisonment. The four accused Rohan Dhungat, Nafiaz Shaikh, Shankar Tiwari and Jovito Pinto had first filed the pleas in High Court of Bombay at Goa. HC had dismissed the pleas in August 2022 ruling that a 14-year period cannot include the remission period such as parole, furlough etc. The High Court order was challenged by the four accused in Supreme Court. While dismissing the SLP SC pointed out that if the pleas are accepted it will set a precedent. Influential prisoners will get parole number of times and if that period gets excluded from the sentence it will defeat the very object and purpose of actual imprisonment. As on date the 4 accused have already completed 11 to 12 years of their sentence.
