25-year-old accident victim gives new lease of life to four; green corridor to transport organs

    Digital Goa, Sept 15 – Courageous decision of a family of 25-year-old accident victim from Belgaum to donate his organs has given a new lease of life to 4 persons – 2 from Goa and one each from Chennai and Delhi. The person who hails from Belgaum had met with accident in Goa on Sept 13. He has received severe head injuries. The patient was declared brain dead yesterday night by GMC Hospital’s Brain Stem Death Certification Panel. Following which his heart, liver and both the kidneys were procured for donation. As per the waiting list maintained for organ recipients at state, regional and national level, one kidney was donated to a 31-year-old at GMC who was on dialysis, second kidney will be transplanted to a 45-year-old patient at Healthway Hospital, heart has been allocated to a patient from MFM Hospital Chennai while liver had been sent to Army Hospital in Delhi. This is the fourth deceased donor organ donation program under the aegis of ROTTO Goa, informed GMC Dean Bandekar. Goa has transplant facilities for kidney but not for heart and liver as of now. 41 patients are on waiting list for kidney at GMC Hospital. As the organs had to be procured and transplanted within Donor warm ischemia time (DWIT), the entire team linked with the retrieval and transplant worked all through the day and night, he further added appreciating the work put in by the team.
