56% patients referred to GMC Hospital due to lack of facilities at District & Sub District Hospitals: Assembly Stats

Digital Goa, Mar 24 – Of the 1,80,256 referrals from CHCs and PHCs across Goa in the last 5 years, 56 % i.e. 1,00,872 were made to GMC, highlighted the data presented on the floor of the house today by Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane. 1,80,256 patients were referred from Primary Health Centres, Urban Health Centres, Community Health Centres and Primary Urban Health Centres to the Goa Medical College Hospital or South Goa District Hospital or District Hospital, Mapusa or Sub District Hospital, Ponda, TB Chest, Private and other hospitals during last 5 years.
Highlighting the lack of facilities at hospitals other than GMC, Leader of opposition Yuri Alemao said that the situation is like overdose of hardware crying for software. Pointing out there are large number of referrals made to GMC even from District Hospital Margao due to lack of equipment and doctors, he said that it should be downgraded and renamed as Primary Health Center.
