41-year-old bridge over Kali river at Karwar collapses; no casualties reported

Aug 7- Old Kali Bridge on NH4 at Karwar, Karnataka collapsed at around 1am today. Major tragedy was averted as the 40-year-old bridge collapsed during night time. A driver of the truck which fell into the river following the bridge collapse has been rescued. Showing presence of mind the driver, 37-year-old Murugan from Tamil Nadu managed to come out of the vehicle cabin and perched himself on top of the truck. He was rescued by Karnataka FES. The other new bridge alongside the collapsed bridge was closed for traffic for some time yesterday to ascertain its structural stability by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Later, vehicles, except heavy ones, were allowed to pass through.
