Sakshi Kale was so excited about casting her vote for the first time that she lined up outside the polling booth at 9am.The champion blind athlete, now an Election Icon, had made a fervent appeal through Goa’s chief electoral office, asking all persons with disabilities to come out and exercise their franchise. And just like on the track, she led from the front.“I was really excited about voting for the first time, and made sure I did it as early in the morning as possible,” said Sakshi, flaunting her inked finger and the voter identity card after voting at Khandepar.(THE TIMES OF INDIA)

In the scorching summer heat, rehabilitated sex workers made a powerful statement by heading to the polling booth to cast their vote in the Lok Sabha elections. This marked their first opportunity to participate in the democratic process after being granted a voter ID. Empowered by this new found inclusion, one of them remarked, “While most people get their voting card at age 18, I got mine at 30. This makes me feel very accomplished. A 75-year-old senior citizen from Carmona was forced to return home disappointed and angry after she found that her name had been knocked off the electoral roll. The woman, Anastasia Fernandes, was eager to vote and ensured that her daughter took her to the polling station — Sacred Heart School — only to be told that she could not vote.Her name had been deleted from the voter roll on the assumption that she had passed away.(THE TIMES OF INDIA)

In an initiative towards inclusivity, five polling booths in North Goa and three in South Goa were manned by Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). Ratna More, who is affected by polio, and presided over one of these booths, marking her second time in this role, said that this time around, she noticed improvement compared to her previous experience.(THE NAVHIND TIMES)

Parents usually save money and jewellery during their lifetime and bequeath it to their children before or shortly after they are no more. Imagine then the surprise of the children of a man, who passed away about 12 years ago, to find a staggering amount of about Rs 3 crore in currency notes and some jewellery stored in bank lockers which he and his wife had faithfully saved during their lifetime But in an unusual twist of fate, the money was virtually useless as the currency were all in the demonetised notes. In a significant step towards inclusivity, the transgender community in the State exercised its franchise for the Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday.Madhu Gupta, a transgender from Santa Cruz, cast her vote for the first time. “It is every person’s right to vote, and we are entitled to select the candidate of our choice as well. It has made us very happy to be included,” said Madhu, visibly excited about the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.(HERALD)
