🔸 Green tribunal panel to inspect Siridao khazans
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the formation of a joint committee to carry out a site inspection at Siridao to look into allegations of destruction of khazan lands to make way for illegal constructions. NGT has given the joint committee four weeks to carry out the inspection and submit the report.
“We also deem it appropriate to constitute a joint committee comprising one member each of respondent Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority and North collector, of which GCZMA shall be nodal agency, with a direction that the committee, after informing the applicant, shall visit the site in question and submit its report with respect to illegal structures/construction at the site in question within four weeks,” the tribunal has said. The application before NGT was filed by an NGO through its president Praveen D’Lima seeking the site inspection. (THE TIMES OF INDIA)
🔸 Worms slither from taps, Mandur residents fall ill
A few residents of Dhaktembhat, Dongorim, in Azossim-Mandur panchayat fell ill after consuming contaminated tap water on Tuesday, as dirty water from a drain mixed with potable water due to a broken supply line. The pollution was noticed on Sunday and a few households received the contaminated water. “We noticed worms after flashing a torch light in the bucket in the dark,” a local resident said.
The affected residents suffered vomiting and giddiness and some fainted due to consumption of contaminated water. The contamination of the drinking water was due to damage caused to the pipeline near the drains. (THE TIMES OF INDIA)
🔸 Restriction on plastic use at Lairai jatra
The temple management committee of the Lairai temple has decided restrict the use of plastic at this year’s jatra. Preparations are under way for the five-day jatra of goddess Lairai in Shirgao which starts on Sunday.“Devotees and shopkeepers have been requested to use cloth bags instead of plastic ones,” said Ganesh Gaonkar, president of temple management committee. Initiating action in order to tackle the issue of pharmaceutical-induced environmental pollution, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to all the states and Union territories including Goa asking them to provide detailed compliance reports explaining the existing regulatory norms, the number of pharmaceutical companies adhering to these norms and the actions initiated against violators. The State government will find solution to fill 16 vacant posts of panchayat secretaries in village panchayats. There are 226 posts of panchayat secretaries and 210 posts are filled up. Currently 23 panchayat secretaries are holding additional charge, Advocate General Devidas Pangam told the High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday. (HERALD)

🔸 25 VVPAT units among 49 faulty machines replaced
Not the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) but rather the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines were a major challenge during the voting held on Tuesday. A total of 49 EVMs and VVPAT machines were replaced as 33 were found to be defective of which VVPATs constituted the highest at 25. Chief Electoral Officer Ramesh Verma revealed that the highest number of faults occurred in the VVPATs this time. According to the data provided, 25 VVPATs experienced technical glitches while only eight EVMs were found to be faulty, hence replaced. Of these, the majority of 15 VVPAT issues were in South Goa and 10 in the North. (THE GOAN)
