Digital Goa, Mar 12 – Quarry blasting is done in Tillari area in Maharashtra only during the 2 to 3 summer months when the dam water reduces significantly, claimed WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar. “I don’t think is is going to effect us much,” he added. Shirodkar informed that Goa Chief Engineer has already written a letter to Maharashtra govt seeking inquiry report in the matter. CE has also spoked to the concerned engineer, he said. Stating that the govt does not know whether the stone quarrying in the area is legal or illegal, Shirodkar said, “If there is going to be any effect, we will talk to the engineers there and tell them to stop the work.” Villagers of Khanyale, Dodamarg in Maharashtra have been protesting against the quarry blasting near the Tillari Dam and are on hunger strike for past 7 days. They have expressed fear that constant blasting near the dam could weaken its foundation. The dam serves as a crucial source of drinking water and irrigation for both Goa and Maharashtra.
