Supreme Court directs Goa govt to grant one MBBS seat to international sailor under sports quota

Digital Goa, October 10 – The Supreme Court of India has directed the State of Goa to allocate one medical seat under the Sports Quota to international sports sailor Pearl Milind Colvalcar for admission to NEET (UG) 2025. Colvalcar had challenged an August 25 order of the Bombay High Court (Goa Bench), which had quashed the state government’s decision to allocate vacant seats under the Children of Freedom Fighter category to eligible sports persons under the sports quota. The bench noted that while it would not interfere with the High Court’s order on merits, the petitioner deserved relief in special circumstances. The Court clarified that the seat allocation should be adjusted from a seat that would have otherwise remained unfilled and should not be treated as a legal precedent. “This direction is in the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case and shall not be treated as a precedent,” stated the apex court order.
