Human Rights Commission recommends six-month child care leave for professor

Digital Goa, August, 10 – Goa Human Rights Commission has recommended that a college professor be granted Child Care Leave from September 1, 2026 to February 27, 2027, after finding that her request had earlier been restricted to just 89 days without giving reasons. The professor, a single mother with 27 years of service, had sought eight months’ leave to provide parental guidance and emotional support to her younger child, who is studying in Class XII. The Commission observed that she was not given an opportunity to be heard before her leave was curtailed and stressed that child care leave seeks to protect not only a mother’s rights but also a child’s right to her care and comfort. The authorities have been asked to report action taken or proposed by September 10.
