Digital Goa, Mar 13 – SGPDA is mulling temporary shifting of the Margao wholesale fish market to Verna IDC for a period of 6 odd months in view of completion of the wholesale fish market complex work, informed SGPDA Chairman Daji Salkar. He said that he has asked GIDC Chairman for space with shade for temporary period of 6 months to shift the market. Explaining the rationale behind the shifting, Salkar said that 75% of the market complex work has been completed. GSIDC has asked SGPDA to handover the remaining 25 % part of the market from where wholesales are presently operating. GSIDC has assured of completing the entire work within 6 months time after that. When queried over inconvenience caused to vendors and people, Salkar claimed that the two locations are hardly 10 minutes apart adding, “Goans can go anywhere for their fish”. Fishermen as well as vendors have expressed concern over the shifting of the market.
The Rs 15.59 crore worth wholesale fish market project which commenced in 2022 was expected to be completed in March 2024. The state-of-the-art project is expected to have an auction platform, parking bays, FDA testing office, cold storage, offices for traders, cafeteria, other administrative functions & utility services. Incidentally, as per GSIDC website only 54 % of the market work has been completed.
