80% accidents in Goa attributed to drunken driving says CM

Oct 14 – Nearly 80 % of the accidents in the state are due to drunken driving. Minimum one person dies due to accident and 10 are admitted in GMC alone with serious injuries every single day, informed CM Pramod Sawant today. On an average the state sees 40 to 50 accidents per day, he added. He was speaking at the inauguration of Road Safety Week Program today. He urged people to refrain from driving when drunk and not to use mobile while driving. He also asked youngsters to avoid over speeding and stunts. As on date, govt has provided around Rs 7 crore as compensation to family members of accident victims, he further informed.
▪️ Bus drivers entering and leaving state to be checked for drunk driving
Pointing out that several lives are at stake when a bus driver is drunk, Sawant said RTO will be asked to put a system in place to check with alcometer at the borders if public bus drivers are drunk when they enter or leave the state. If a driver is found drunk, he will be replaced, CM informed.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said that the state is contemplating installing night vision cameras statewide to curb traffic violations at night.
