Arpora tragedy – 23 of 25 victims died of suffocation says CM, announces Ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh

Digital Goa, Dec 7 – Of the 25 people who died in the Arpora club fire, four were tourists from Delhi, while the rest were staff members from Uttarakhand and Jharkhand, with three victims from Nepal, informed CM Pramod Sawant today. The state will assist the family members in transporting the bodies of the victims to their native places including Nepal. He also announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of deceased and assistance of Rs 50,000 for those who have sustained major injuries. Center has also announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 50,000 assistance to those injured.

🔸 Government orders safety audits and SOPs for clubs after Arpora fire
Digital Goa, Dec 7 – Goa government has announced that all clubs and similar establishments will undergo a safety audit by a committee led by the secretary (revenue), with members from the police, PWD (for building safety) and finance departments. An SOP will be framed based on the audit and will be mandatory for all establishments.

Digital Goa, Dec 7- Goa govt has suspended Dr. Shamila Monteiro, formerly Member Secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board and currently Director of Fisheries, with immediate effect pending disciplinary proceedings.

🔸 Names of all 25 victims from Arpora fire tragedy released
Digital Goa, Dec 7- Authorities have released the full list of 25 victims who died in the Birch by Romeo Lane fire in Arpora, comprising 20 staff and 5 tourists. Deceased tourisst: Ishaq from Karnataka, and Saroj Joshi, Vinod Kumar, Anita Joshi, and Kamla Joshi from Delhi. The other victims who are primarily staff of the club, have been identified as: Mohit, Pradeep Mahto, and Binod Mahto (Jharkhand), Rahul Tanti and Manojit Mal (Assam), Satish Singh, Surender Singh, Jitendra Singh, Sumit Negi, and Manish Singh (Uttarakhand), Subhash Chetri (Darjeeling, West Bengal), Vivek Katwal, Sabin, Churna Bahadur Pun, and Sudeep (Nepal), Sunil Kumar and Rohan Singh (Uttar Pradesh), Dominic and Manoj Jora (Maharashtra), and Digambar Patir (Assam).

🔸 Protest erupts at Calangute Police Station after Arpora Sarpanch’s detention
Digital Goa, Dec 7- Irate crowds marched to the Calangute Police Station after Arpora Sarpanch Roshan Redkar was detained by police in connection with the nightclub fire incident that killed 25 people. Police released Redkar soon after, following demands from people led by Adv Amit Palekar to disclose the grounds for his detention. Police informed the crowd that Redkar had been brought in for questioning related to the nightclub fire. The crowd called the police action illegal and urged police to take action against all government agencies that had turned a blind eye to the illegalities at the club. They pointed out that the Sarpanch had issued a stop-work order and revoked the club’s licence, while other agencies failed to act. They added that the Director of Panchayats later granted a stay on the licence revocation order.
