Bombay High Court dismisses 2014 PIL on Calangute beach shacks

Digital Goa, September 8 – The High Court of Bombay at Goa has dismissed a 2014 Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the removal of shacks and construction of septic tanks on Calangute beach. The petition, filed by Reuben Franco, was deemed “infructuous” by the bench. The petition claimed that shacks from the 2012-2013 tourist season were not cleared and that shack allottees had built septic tanks in violation of their licenses. The court also noted that new comprehensive shack policies, including the 2023-2026 policy, mandate portable toilet facilities and prohibit septic tanks and soak pits, addressing the issues raised in the petition.
