The second edition of the popular community festival, Festa do Povo, returns to Panaji again, driving home the “of the people, by the people and for the people” philosophy in order to comprehensively promote Goan culture, environment, heritage and camaraderie.
The festival is organised through civic participation, with the support of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) and Imagine Panaji, along the mangrove lined pedestrian spine at Patto Plaza near Spaces building. The residents of different wards of the city living in heritage homes and heritage blocks are involved in the planning of the festival. Festa do Povo will be held on December 14 and 15 and is a celebration of Panjim.
From Goan-Portuguese and Hindu Saraswat dishes to Muslim cuisine, the festival boasts a delightful array of food stalls by local home chefs, residents of Panjim and Salcete and other places of Goa alongside international chefs and popular culinary fare restaurants from Panaji. The festival’s food segment reflects Goa’s culinary diversity, spanning across religious groupings. A dedicated feni bar and beverage station promoting local drinks will also add to the festive vibe.
The two-day event promises to offer a rich tapestry of Goan cultural elements. Day one (December 14) will feature traditional Shigmo dances, storytelling sessions about mythical rakhondars and the seven sisters (representations of Mother Earth) and children’s craft activities curated by Bookworm, a city-based community book-store for children. Attendees can revel in performances like the Kaustubha Ballet, the popular Stuti Choir, the traditional dekhni dance and melodies by Sound of Music. On day two (December 15), brass band performances, percussions, carol singing by students from the Nirmala School will set the tone for band performances by The Riffs and Crimson Tide, promising entertainment for all age groups, irrespective of whether it’s local residents, Goan visitors or tourists.
A highlight of this year’s Festa do Povo is an art exhibition featuring works by 20 artists which include senior artists and students of art, blending Goa’s established and upcoming creative talent. Visitors will also enjoy intimate storytelling sessions at various locations spread across the festival area, bringing alive Goa’s folklore amidst the picturesque mangroves of Patto Plaza.
The event which is a celebration of life is free for all. There is no entry fee.
