FIDE World Cup 2025 inaugurated; 206 top chess players from 80 countries to vie for Viswanathan Anand Cup

Digital Goa, Oct 31 – India is sending a clear message to the world that it is not only leading in technology, economy, and defence but also emerging as a leader in sports, said Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The FIDE World Cup 2025 was inaugurated in Goa today in the presence of Mandaviya, CM Pramod Sawant, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and other dignitaries. India is hosting the prestigious chess tournament after 23 years. Dvorkovich hailed India as “the motherland and greatest powerhouse of chess.” CM Sawant expressed hope that the World Cup would become a celebration of sports and friendship. The tournament will feature 206 top players from 80 countries, in an eight-round knockout format. The trophy was also unveiled at the event, and has been named the Viswanathan Anand Cup.
