Digital Goa, Jan 12- The Goa State Human Rights Commission (GHRC) on Monday set aside an eviction notice issued by the Socorro Village Panchayat to the family of a man arrested for sexually assaulting a six-year-old child, declaring it “bad in law” and ordering its immediate removal. The Commission, acting on suo motu cognisance, held that the December 24, 2025 notice by Panchayat had no legal backing under the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, as it was issued without proper adjudication. The Panchayat has been directed to remove the notice within 48 hours and submit an action-taken report by January 27, 2026, under the Protection of Human Rights Act. The eviction notice followed public outrage after the arrest of the accused who is a driver by profession and transported children including the victim child to school. The GHRC emphasised that Panchayats cannot evict residents based on public sentiment or allegations against an individual, and due process must be upheld.
