Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Tuesday hailed the landmark GST 2.0 reforms as a major step toward strengthening India’s ease of doing business framework, saying they would bring substantial relief to households, MSMEs, exporters, and small traders in Goa. Speaking at a seminar organised by the Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) to mark its 118th Foundation Day, Sawant underlined key decisions such as 90% upfront provisional refunds for exporters, simplified registration for small and e-commerce suppliers, and the long-awaited operationalisation of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT).
He stressed that reduced GST on essentials, medicines, healthcare, insurance, and agricultural equipment would directly benefit Goan families, farmers, and entrepreneurs. “As Goa marches ahead, we must leverage these reforms to improve competitiveness, attract investments, and generate sustainable employment. The onus is now on businesses, professionals, and industry bodies to gear up for a smooth transition,” Sawant said, assuring that the government would work hand-in-hand with industry to ensure Goa becomes a model state for growth and good governance.
Earlier, GCCI President Pratima Dhond described the reforms as “momentous,” highlighting the simplified two-slab structure of 5% and 18%, with a special 40% rate for luxury and sin goods. She said the move would boost compliance, reduce litigation, and strengthen the economy.
GCCI Honorary Secretary CA Rohan Bhandare observed that the reforms coincided with GCCI’s 118th Foundation Day, calling it a historic milestone. He welcomed the measures but urged the government to support industry during the transition period, given the short timeline for implementation.
Guest of Honour, SGST Commissioner Sarpreet Singh Gill, IAS, lauded the CM’s role in building consensus at the GST Council, saying his leadership was crucial in shaping the reforms.
The seminar also featured a technical session with CA Gaurav Kenkre, followed by a panel discussion with SGST Additional Commissioner Vishant Gaunekar and CA Kenkre, moderated by CA Yatish Pai Vernekar. The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session and a vote of thanks by CA Atindra Prabhu Bhatikar.
