HC issues notice on Goa Foundation plea to suspend mining operations in Goa

Digital Goa, August 20 – High Court has issued notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Goa Foundation seeking suspension of all mining operations in the state post-monsoon, citing complete regulatory failure. The matter will be heard on September 18, 2025. The PIL has been filed to seek the intervention of the Court to enforce directions issued by the Supreme Court, along with statutory provisions under the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation (MMDR) Act, 1957, the Goa (Prevention of Illegal Mining, Storage, Transportation of Minerals) Rules, 2013 and the Goa Mineral Policy, 2013. The Court has fixed the matter next for consideration of interim relief on Sept 18, 2025. The PIL concerns the re-commencement of mining activities in Goa, without proper regulatory system in place. Goa Foundation has sought interim reliefs including deployment of adequate staff for 24×7 monitoring of mining operations, setting up of an independent ore-grading laboratory, mechanisms to verify production and pricing data, and a grievance redressal system for affected villages.
