High Court pulls up WRD over slow action on illegal borewells in Chimbel

Digital Goa, July 6 – Expressing dissatisfaction over the slow pace of action against illegal borewells in Chimbel, the High Court at Goa has directed the Secretary of the Water Resources Department (WRD) to personally intervene and ensure all illegal borewells in the area are identified and sealed before the next hearing on July 15. The Court noted that of the 70 illegal borewells identified by the WRD, only 27 have been sealed so far, while 12 persons have applied for regularisation of their illegal borewells. It observed that the department was moving “very slow” in identifying borewells in Dharwadkar Colony and Serrao Colony in Chimbel. The Court added the WRD Secretary as a respondent in the PIL and directed the department not to grant any permissions for regularisation of borewells in the area until further orders. The Court also directed the Police and the Panchayat to assist WRD officials in locating and sealing illegal borewells.
