“Raj Kapoor’s films transcend time and borders,” opined Ranbir Kapoor during a special session at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), held as part of the centenary celebrations of the legendary actor and director. The session, which featured Ranbir Kapoor and veteran filmmaker Rahul Rawail, explored Raj Kapoor’s monumental contributions to Indian cinema and his enduring legacy. He also announced that a film festival showcasing restored movies of his grandfather, veteran filmmaker Raj Kapoor, will be held across the country to celebrate his birth centenary in December.

Reflecting on his grandfather’s influence, Ranbir highlighted the universal appeal of Raj Kapoor’s works, such as AwaraMera Naam Joker, and Shree 420. “From Russia to India, his films resonated deeply with audiences, touching on themes that remain relevant even today,” he remarked.

Ranbir underscored the societal relevance of Raj Kapoor’s films, noting how Awara tackled casteism, Shree 420 explored greed and ambition, and later films like Prem Rog and Ram Teri Ganga Maili championed women’s issues and moral narratives. “His vision was ahead of his time, addressing challenges that continue to resonate,” Ranbir added.

The session also revealed an ambitious effort to preserve Raj Kapoor’s cinematic genius. Ranbir shared that ten of Raj Kapoor’s films have already been restored in collaboration with the NFDC, NFAI, and the Film Heritage Foundation, with plans to re-release them across India in December 2024. “Preserving these masterpieces is crucial for future generations to experience the brilliance of Raj Kapoor,” he emphasized.

In addition to celebrating Raj Kapoor’s legacy, the discussion delved into broader topics like filmmaking, acting, and cinema’s role in societal change. Ranbir shared how fatherhood had heightened his awareness of environmental and social issues, urging artists to use their platforms for advocacy. He encouraged aspiring actors to embrace individuality, saying, “Find your own unique style, even as you draw inspiration from the greats.”

Veteran filmmaker Rahul Rawail contributed insights into Raj Kapoor’s influence on the industry and society. Concluding the event, Ranbir expressed gratitude to IFFI for organizing the tribute and called upon the audience to revisit Raj Kapoor’s timeless works. “Let us continue to celebrate his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema,” Ranbir said, echoing the sentiment of the evening.
