Randeep Hooda’s directorial debut, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, was the opening film of the Indian Panorama at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024. The film, which explores the life of the controversial freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, delves into the untold story of the armed revolutionaries who played a crucial role in India’s independence movement alongside Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent struggle.

Director Randeep Hooda shared insights into his debut directorial project, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, which opened the Indian Panorama section. The film, challenges the mainstream narrative of the freedom struggle.

Hooda said while speaking at the event, “Our freedom wasn’t just achieved through non-violence—there were those who believed in the necessity of armed resistance,” Hooda explained, adding that his film seeks to highlight the sacrifices of these revolutionaries and their often overlooked contributions.

The actor-turned-director spoke about the transformative journey of stepping behind the camera. “Actors are like children,” he joked, reflecting on the revelation he had about his own journey from being a newcomer. He also expressed his hope that Swatantrya Veer Savarkar would spark important discussions on India’s freedom struggle, emphasizing that his film does not discredit the non-violent movement but aims to give due recognition to the armed revolutionaries.

Looking ahead, Hooda teased his next project, an action-packed venture with Sunny Deol, but for now, he is focused on the impact his film will have on audiences. “It’s a story that needs to be seen and understood,” he said.
