Digital Goa, June 12 – Minister and Ex CM Digambar Kamat on Friday termed the Electricity Department’s practice of imposing penalties without prior intimation, which have led to a steep rise in electricity bills, as ‘illogical and unfair’. Kamat, along with residents of Margao, met Electricity Department officials over complaints regarding high power bills issued to consumers. Allowing consumers to pay the bills in instalments will not solve the problem, Kamat opined, stressing that the root cause of the issue needed to be addressed. He added that he would take up the matter with CM Pramod Sawant and the party leadership to find a solution.
Meanwhile, Electricity Department has maintained that the increase in power bills is mainly due to penalties imposed on consumers using electricity beyond their sanctioned load and has been urging consumers to obtain sanction under the appropriate load slab.
“ Ask CM” , Power Minister’s reaction to Kamat’s statement
When asked about Kamat’s statement, Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said CM is the appropriate person to respond as State government was implementing a decision taken by the Centre.
Meanwhile, AAP Goa has asserted that they will intensify protest if the heavy penalties imposed on consumers are not withdrawn at the earliest.
