“I was advised against selecting this film (Mimi) by many people. They feared I’d be labeled an actor who prefers art house films, potentially affecting future projects. But I chose it because the script touched my heart. That should matter most when choosing projects,” said National Award-winning actor Kriti Sanon at a lively panel discussion during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024.

Speaking at the session “Empowering Change: Women Leading the Way in Cinema” at Kala Academy, Sanon shared her journey of taking risks in the entertainment industry, particularly her decision to take on the challenging role in Mimi. Despite skepticism from others, the film earned her the National Award for Best Actor (Female), solidifying her position as one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated performers.

The Need for Backup Plans in Uncertain Careers

Sanon also shared practical advice for aspiring filmmakers and actors. Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of showbiz, she said, “It is better for aspiring filmmakers to keep backup career options ready.” She encouraged them to be prepared for the uncertainties while pursuing their creative dreams.

Exploring Bold and Diverse Roles

Looking ahead, Sanon expressed her desire to push boundaries further. “I want to play a superwoman or a negative character in the future. Women should grow and work on themselves, give their hundred percent, stay curious, and ask questions,” she said, urging women in cinema to remain proactive and fearless.

Women Transforming Cinema

The session shed light on the transformative role women are playing in Indian cinema, with Sanon as a prominent example of taking risks and redefining success. Her insights inspired the audience, emphasizing the need for resilience, self-growth, and bold decision-making in carving a niche in the industry.

Sanon’s heartfelt reflections and empowering message left a lasting impression, offering a roadmap for aspiring creatives looking to navigate the dynamic yet uncertain world of cinema.
