Digital Goa, June 3 – In what could be shot in the arm for anti Mhadei diversion movement in Goa, large number of people from across Karnataka gathered in Belagavi on Monday to protest the proposed diversion of the Mhadei (Mahadayi) River. The protest, held under the banner of Rally for Belagavi, brought together farmers, students, environmentalists, and concerned citizens in a powerful show of unity. Organisers described the rally as a people’s movement to protect the lifeline of Belagavi and North Karnataka. The protestors warned that river diversion could lead to severe droughts, ecological imbalance, and long-term climate consequences for the region. The rally also aimed to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding the forests, lakes, and waterfalls of Belagavi and the Western Ghats. Demonstrators said the movement was not just about water, but about ensuring water justice, preserving biodiversity, and protecting the future of generations to come.
