Digital Goa, Dec 26 – Tense situation was witnessed at Nhaibag, Poraskade at Pernem after Mines Department started the process of cutting 26 canoes without valid license number which were allegedly seized during sand mining raids. As per officials the action has been initiated as per directions of the High Court. The Dept officials managed to cut one canoe, but were met with stiff opposition from locals. Villagers said that their canoes were non-operational for several years due to ban on sand mining and instead of finding solution to the issue more problems were created for them by the govt by coming to destroy their canoes. As per the DMG officials, Panchayat was asked to send a notice to the canoe owners to lay their claim on the canoes. Officials claimed that as per information provided by the Panchayat no person came forward to claim ownership of the canoes, so the department went ahead with the cutting work.
