Nagpur youth arrested for duping Canacona resident of ₹80 lakh in ‘digital arrest’ fraud

Digital Goa, Sept16 – Goa Police Cyber Crime Cell has arrested a 19-year-old youth, Anand Kumar Verma from Nagpur, Maharashtra, in connection with a fraud case where a Loliem, Canacona resident was duped of ₹80 lakh under the pretext of a so-called “digital arrest.” Scammers alleged that a SIM card had been obtained using the complainant’s Aadhaar card and was being used to send messages against the Hindu religion. Subsequently, the complainant was made to undergo a fake “digital arrest” over WhatsApp video calls. To “settle the matter,” the complainant was coerced into transferring ₹80 lakh across four different bank accounts. During investigation, police found that ₹20 lakh of the defrauded money had been deposited into Verma’s bank account in Nagpur. Acting on this lead, police nabbed the accused on September 10 and later brought him to Goa for further investigation.
