Dec 23- The central government has officially ended the “no-detention” policy for Classes 5 and 8, allowing schools to hold back students who fail to clear year-end exams. A gazette notification dated December 16, 2024, titled Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Rules, 2024, grants state governments the authority to conduct regular exams and retain students who do not meet promotion criteria. The Ministry of Education has also called for remedial measures to address learning gaps for struggling students. This marks a shift from the long-standing policy introduced under the RTE Act in 2009.

No child shall be expelled from any school till he completes elementary education, the notification asserts. Elementary education in India is the foundation of a child’s formal education and is intended for children aged 6 to 14
