Digital Goa, Sept 1 – Goa Legislative Assembly today witnessed a debate on the State’s law and order situation, with the Opposition flagging a sharp increase in several categories of crime, a conviction rate of just 5.85%, shortage of police personnel and the growing pendency of criminal cases. Opposition pointed out that while the crime detection rate stood at 98.92%, the conviction rate was only 5.85%. CM Pramod Sawant informed the House that around 9,000 of the 12,795 cases were pending.The Opposition highlighted that other crimes against women rose 58%, crimes against children 51%, kidnapping 50% and narcotics cases 34%.Cybercrime cases saw one of the steepest increases, rising 272% from 32 to 119 over five years, while there were only two convictions during the period. Organised crime cases, which stood at zero in 2021, had increased to 37, it said.The Opposition also raised the issue of drugs finding their way into Colvale jail and the recent shootout at Porvorim.
