Panaji becomes a giant festival stage as IFFI 56 opens with its first-ever street parade

Goa kicked off the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in spectacular fashion, taking the festival out of auditoriums and onto the streets for the first time in its history. Panaji turned into a colourful open-air arena as performers, filmmakers and thousands of residents joined a vibrant parade celebrating cinema and culture.

Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju said IFFI has evolved into a global platform for creative exchange. “With Goa’s cosmopolitan character and cultural richness, it is natural for film lovers to gather here,” he said.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant highlighted Goa’s growing reputation as India’s top filming destination, backed by reforms such as easier permissions and the Film Finance Scheme. “IFFI bridges Indian talent with global possibilities. Our dream is to make Goa the creative capital of India,” he said, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising India’s global presence in cinema.

Union Minister of State for I&B Dr. L. Murugan said this year’s cultural carnival reflects India’s diverse traditions and growing creative economy. He recalled the contribution of late Manohar Parrikar in making Goa IFFI’s permanent home.

I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju noted that the 2025 edition features IFFI’s largest film lineup—entries from about 80 countries, multiple premieres, an AI Film Hackathon and the biggest-ever WAVES Film Bazaar.

Veteran actor Nandamuri Balakrishna was honoured for completing 50 years in cinema.

The parade showcased cultural tableaux from Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Goa, along with floats by leading production houses like Zee Studios, Mythri Movie Makers, Hombale Films and Ultra Media. A special NFDC “50 Years” tableau marked the corporation’s five-decade journey in nurturing Indian filmmaking.

The opening act, “Bharat Ek Soor”, brought together over 100 artists performing folk dances from 16 states—including Bhangra, Garba, Lavani, Ghoomar and Bihu—ending with a striking tricolour formation.

The ceremony was attended by Union Minister of State Shripad Naik, actor Anupam Kher, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and delegates from around the world.

The festival runs in Goa from November 20–28, featuring screenings, cultural events, masterclasses and the high-energy Film Bazaar.
