Power Minister clarifies ToD tariff not applicable to domestic consumers

Digital Goa, October 27 – Power Minister Sudin Dhavlikar clarified that the Time of Day (ToD) tariff is not applicable to domestic or low-tension power consumers, but has been in place for industrial users for several years. “This is not something new,” he claimed. He added that the recent power tariff hike—effective from October 1, 2025—was a marginal 2.5% for domestic consumers, translating to around 10 paise per unit. Dhavlikar further informed that the Electricity Department will begin implementing smart meters from December 2025, starting with government offices. Responding to criticism from the opposition over the department’s alleged proposal to increase night-time power tariffs by 20%, Dhavlikar claimed that his statement was miscommunicated by the media. He dismissed opposition allegations regarding the hike, urging critics to “understand the issue before resorting to protests.” Opposition leaders had earlier staged a protest outside the Electricity Department in Panaji.
