Proposal for nuclear power plant in Goa discussed: Union Minister Khattar

Digital Goa, May 12: Proposal to set up a nuclear power generation plant in the state is under consideration, informed Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar. Given the limitations in hydro and solar generation, nuclear power is a possibility we can think of for Goa, he stated, adding that feasibility studies will be conducted in view of this. He further emphasised the goal of making every region in the country self-reliant in power. Currently, India generates 8 GW of power through nuclear energy, with a target of scaling it up to 100 GW by 2047. Goa, meanwhile, has set a target of 22,000 rooftop solar installations under the Suryaghar scheme by 2026–27, Khattar said. The minister appreciated Goa for its low Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses compared to the rest of the country.
Khattar also said the Union government would consider Goa’s proposal of Rs 652 crore assistance to improve the state’s water supply system. “We will think over it,” he said. He announced assistance for 50 electric buses and Rs 113 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Financial support for sewage treatment plants in Margao, Sanquelim, and Ponda has also been approved.
CM Dr Pramod Sawant, who accompanied the Union Minister, said the state has received firm assurance of support in the areas of sewerage, urban development, and power.
