Sept 4- Supreme Court today expressed hope and trust that Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker will discharge his Constitutional obligations before the next date of hearing in the 8 MLAs disqualification matter in November 2024. The apex court was hearing the petition filed by Congress leader Girish Chodankar last year, seeking directions to Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar to dispose off the disqualification petition filed against the MLAs within period prescribed by law as laid down by the Supreme Court i.e. within three months. Supreme Court has now adjourned the matter by eight weeks following request by Speaker’s counsel. “ Re-list in the week commencing 04.11.2024. We hope and trust that Constitutional obligations will be discharged by respondent No. 1 by the next date of hearing,” stated the SC order. Incidentally, in its earlier order in the matter on May 10,2024 also Supreme Court had exuded hope and trust that the proceedings in all cases will conclude expeditiously. The 8 Congress MLAs had defected to BJP in Sept 2022.
