Digital Goa, Jan 8- South Goa Lok Sabha MP Captain Viriato Fernandes, an Indian Navy officer (Retd) and Kargil War veteran, has received a notice from the Election Commission of India (ECI) asking him to appear with documents to prove his identity to retain his name in the electoral roll. Sharing the notice received by him on social media, Captain Fernandes said the notice comes despite the ECI subjecting all candidates, including him, to intense scrutiny before clearing their names for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He highlighted his long voting record, noting that he has been voting since 1989, and has traveled from various military postings during his 26-year service in the Indian Navy to cast votes in Lok Sabha, Assembly, Panchayat, and Zilla elections. Expressing concern over the broader implications, he questioned the state of common voters, suggesting that the SIR scrutiny process, could risk deleting legitimate voters’ names and prevent them from participating in elections.
