Renowned author and lyricist Prasoon Joshi highlighted the challenges of storytelling in India during his masterclass The Journey from Script to Screen: Writing for Film and Beyond at IFFI 2024. Joshi described how creative and practical restrictions often lead to the premature abandonment of story ideas, terming it “story infanticide.”

“India is the place where story infanticide happens,” he remarked, emphasizing the need to nurture ideas without losing faith in their potential.

Speaking on the universality of personal experiences, Joshi shared how his childhood memories inspired the lyrics of Taare Zameen Par. “When you narrate something deeply personal, it becomes universal,” he explained.

Joshi also stressed the importance of demystifying the filmmaking process, stating, “Films can have intrigue, but not the filmmaking process.” Reflecting on the power of silence in storytelling, he added, “The best poetry happens in silence. Silence is the eternal sound that connects us.”
