Digital Goa, Jan 2 – Sugarcane Farmers Association have started their indefinite sit-in-protest outside Sanjivani Sugar Factory at Dharbandora over dillydallying by the State Government to restart the factory, as assured earlier. They had earlier issued an ultimatum to the govt of intensifying their agitation from today, Jan 2. Govt had said earlier expressed inability to find a contractor to run the plant in PPP mode. Farmers said that they have already connected the govt with a contractor who was ready to take over working of the plant. They said that they will continue with their sit-in-protest till such time that the govt restarts the factory. Several farmers in the area were dependent on Sugar cane farming for their livelihood since the inception of the factory. The factory was closed down by the govt in 2019-20 on grounds of recurring mechanical problems, non-availability of spare parts and shortage of local sugarcane and mooted switching over to an ethanol-producing unit after revamping it. Farmers are now demanding that the govt fulfills that promise within a months time.
