Digital Goa, Sept 13 – Two-wheelers will be barred from the newly opened Porvorim flyover, and its entry and exit points connecting to the service roads on Porvorim (Nr Neo Majestic hotel) as well as Guirim sides will be closed temporarily, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat said. The minister added that interceptor radar has been installed and police personnel deployed as immediate safety measures. The speed limit has been notified at 65 kmph, and directions have been given to install all related signboards, he added. Kamat cited the corridor’s status as part of the Mumbai–Kanyakumari national highway while explaining the two-wheeler ban. Kamat said an IIM Nagpur team is expected in Goa on Wednesday or Thursday to study traffic at the Merces, Divja and Kadamba circles and recommend a traffic management master plan. Kamat was speaking to media persons after visiting the elevated corridor at Porvorim and the Merces junction today. The state signed an MoU with the institute on Sept 11, and further traffic decisions related to traffic on Porvorim corridor will be guided by its recommendations, he said. The measures follow a collision between a car and a two-wheeler near a Porvorim service-road exit yesterday evening that claimed two lives. Another accident between a bike and car was reported at the same spot today, with no major injuries. The flyover was inaugurated on Sept 11. With the new arrangements, four wheelers heading toward Mapusa and beyond will have to take Atal Setu from the Merces junction, and those traveling from Mapusa towards Panaji or the Secretariat will have to use the existing old ground-level route. However, two-wheelers will have to continue using the old route for to and fro traffic.
