Digital Goa, Mar 13 – In an effort to curb rising number of accidents involving rent-a-cab and rent-a-bikes, Goa police have come up with a new regulation which is to be imposed on persons renting such vehicles. Tourists hiring rent-a-car and rent-a-bikes in Goa will now have to sign an undertaking that they will not violate Motor Vehicle rules while driving in the state. The undertaking comprises of 10 points specifying the rules which the user has to abide by as well as fines to be levied on violation of the rules. The agency renting the bike or the car will have to get the undertaking signed by the tourist. A copy of the undertaking will have to be kept in the vehicle by the tourist throughout their stay in Goa. SP Traffic Rahul Gupta briefed the media about the new regulation. Gupta pointed out that the number of accidents involving rent-a-cab and rent-a-bikes are twice that of other vehicles as tourists who drive these vehicles are unaware of the topography of the state and are moreover in fun and frolic mood as they are on holidays. Although there are no legal provisions linked with the undertaking, police are hopeful that the mechanism will have a psychological impact over the users preventing them from breaking MVA rules. When queried about tourists taking private vehicles on rent instead of registered operators, Gupta said that the new regulation will help identify these people and due action will be taken against them.
