Veterinary upgrade plan notified; Tonca designated super-speciality hospital

Goa government has notified minimum standards for veterinary institutions and a phased, 24-month infrastructure upgrade plan, designating Tonca Veterinary Hospital as the State’s apex super-speciality institution. The framework provides for three district hospitals, 12 taluka-level hospitals and a network of primary veterinary and paravet centres. Under the plan, Mapusa and Sonsodo-Margao will serve as district hubs, while Sanguem Veterinary Dispensary is to be upgraded to a district hospital for Kushavati. Each taluka hospital is envisaged to have two veterinary doctors, round-the-clock emergency care and at least one equipped animal ambulance. The first six months will focus on primary centres, diagnostic equipment, sanitation and mobile veterinary units linked to a 24-hour toll-free helpline. Taluka hospitals are slated for X-ray, ultrasound, surgical and inpatient upgrades during months six to 12.
