At 10.8 Goa’s crude birth rate second lowest in the country: SRS 2023 report

Digital Goa, Sept 9, 2025 – Goa continues to stand out demographically, with the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report 2023 by the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India showing the state recording the second lowest crude birth rate (CBR) among all states and UTs in the country, and simultaneously the highest crude death rate (CDR) among smaller states. According to the report, Goa’s CBR stands at 10.8 (10.4 in rural areas and 11.0 in urban). Among all states and UTs, Goa has the second-lowest CBR, after Andaman & Nicobar Islands(10.1). This is well below the national average of 18.4. On the other hand, Goa’s CDR is at 6.8 per 1,000 people (7.1 rural, 6.7 urban), highest among smaller states and UTs and higher than the national average of 6.4. When it comes to child health, Goa fares better than many states, with an infant mortality rate (IMR) of 6 for the 2021-23 period. However, a gender gap persists—female infant mortality is higher at 8, compared to 4 for males. Manipur recorded the lowest IMR at 3, followed by Ladakh (4), Kerala (5), while Goa and Sikkim were tied at 6. CBR is the number of annual live births in a population per 1,000 and CDR is the number of annual deaths in a population per 1,000.
