Digital Goa, June 9 – The Kala Academy complex will once again be closed for repair works from August 1, with the project to be undertaken by the PWD under the supervision of IIT Madras and the Charles Correa Foundation(CCF), the Kala Academy Task Force headed by theatre personality Damu Kenkre announced on Tuesday. The task force said repairs to the main auditorium will be taken up first, while a decision on the open-air auditorium is yet to be finalised. A consultant has also been appointed to supervise the corrective works. The move follows an IIT Madras assessment that reportedly identified 18 major flaws in the renovation work, including deficiencies related to sound, lighting and other infrastructure. The renovation project was billed at around ₹80 crore, with a major portion of the amount already paid to the contractor. Task force members alleged that nearly 80 % of the expenditure had been wasted and reiterated their demand that the costs of rectification be recovered from the contractor responsible for the works.
They clarified that various classes and training activities currently being conducted at Kala Academy will continue as usual despite the repair works.
