Digital Goa, July 30 – Goa govt has notified free accidental insurance cover of upto 5 lakh for Coconut Pluckers, Toddy Tappers, Neera Technicians, Coconut Harvesters and Friends of Coconut Tree Trainees. The insurance cover is to be provided under the scheme titled ‘Kera Suraksha Insurance’ to be implemented through the Coconut Development Board. The insurance premium payable by the beneficiary will be borne by the Government. It is proposed to cover 1000 coconut pluckers every year under the scheme. Coconut is one of the major crops of Goa covering more than 26,646 ha. of area with annual production of 161.22 million nuts. At present, it is estimated that around 500-600 traditional coconut pluckers are carrying out the business of Harvesting of coconuts in a traditional way.
