🔸 50% drop in cashew output this year in Goa: Forest devpt corp
There is 50% reduction in cashew production in Goa this year, said Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC) chairperson Deviya Rane. “Currently, annual raw cashew production stands at 25,800 tonnes with approximately 20 processing units in operation. Yet, Goa’s cashew production currently stands at 455kg per hectare, much lower than the national average of 760kg per hectare. This places Goa at the seventh position in cashew production nationwide,” she said at the second edition of the Cashew Fest, here, on Friday

Admission to English-speaking courses, employment in big cities, enrolment in hostels or colleges, and online jobs for those laid off in the Covid-19 aftermath — these are some of the new lures used by human traffickers to ensnare targets.Expressing concern over the acquittals in human trafficking cases, DGP Jaspal Singh on Friday said that such legal outcomes are analysed and strategies are modified to convict the traffickers. Speaking at the state-level Conference 2024 on Anti-Human-Trafficking, organised by Goa police and the anti-human-trafficking unit, Panaji, Singh said that the event aims to highlight the persistence of the problem.
🔸 Firm gets notice after Quelossim mangroves destroyed
A joint committee has discovered destruction of mangroves for up to 1km by a private entity in Quelossim in the eco-sensitive khazan lands. Based on directives of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has started proceedings against the company and issued them show cause notice. A violator has sought more time to file additional replies. A local had approached NGT in 2017 seeking that the damaged khazan land be rehabilitated.

In an application seeking an extension to complete restoration of a land in the North Goa beach belt that was illegally used, the High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the applicant to deposit Rs 4 lakh in the court within one week from Wednesday.

31-year-old Jesus D’Costa from Padribhat, Sao Jose de Areal died following an accident between a car and a two-wheeler at Nuvem on Friday night. The Maina-Curtorim police disclosed that the grievously injured Jesus was declared dead on arrival when he was rushed to South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao.

The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned to July, hearing of a petition filed by the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) seeking directions to the Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker to decide on the disqualification petition filed against eight Congress rebel MLAs, who switched over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in September 2022.
