Digital Goa, August 11 – Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has issued notices to the Department of Drinking Water, Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and a Five Start hotel at Moitem over a complaint by Assonora residents alleging serious pollution of the Par River, a source of drinking water for Bardez. The respondents have been directed to file their replies before the Commission on August 26 at 10.30 am. In their complaint dated August 1, residents alleged that the river is being polluted by garbage, sewage and waste and specifically alleged that untreated wastewater and faecal sludge from the resort is being discharged into the river at night. The residents pointed out that the water from the Par River is drawn at the PWD water treatment plant at Moitem, Assonora, treated and supplied across Bardez. They alleged that drinking water reaching households has become unsafe and has an unpleasant odour and taste, posing a potential health risk, particularly to children and the elderly. The complainants have sought an immediate inspection of the river from its origin up to the intake point at the water treatment plant, measures to stop pollution and remove algae, and testing of the water quality along with necessary purification measures. Taking cognisance of the complaint, the Commission has directed the three respondents to submit their replies.
