Forests, communities and humanity’s relationship with nature take centre stage in five films highlighted under the Mission Life section at the 57th International Film Festival of India in Goa. The selection brings together documentaries, drama and experimental science fiction, reflecting the festival’s theme, “Stories without Borders”.
Rithy Panh’s We Are the Fruits of the Forest, an 87-minute documentary from Cambodia and France, brings environment, ethnic minorities, culture and human rights into focus. Nunkui, directed by Verenice Benítez, is a 90-minute drama from Chile, Ecuador and Germany, presented in Spanish and Shuar.
The selection also features The Clearing, an 89-minute documentary by Sabine Groenewegen from Indonesia and the Netherlands; and Tropical Fractals, Leonardo Pirondi’s 72-minute experimental science-fiction film from Brazil and Portugal.
Completing the five titles is Like Any Other Mortal, a 93-minute documentary and science-fiction film by María Molina Peiró from the Netherlands and Spain. Organisers described the collection as an invitation to explore environmental concerns through cinema from across the globe.
