Digital Goa, Jan 14 –  Goa DGP Jaspal Singh today claimed that big gangs or drug mafias are not found to be operational in Goa. Being a tourist state, drugs are peddled in small quantities for recreational purpose only, he asserted. “ Goa is more of a consumption center for recreational purpose. No gang of mafia has come to our notice,” said DGP. He was speaking on the sidelines of awareness program for courier and parcel service operators held in Panaji. DGP also said it to Goa’s advantage that coastal areas and port shipment services are not being used by drug business operators in the state. Giving an indication that the drug trade and police intervention are increasing year on year, Singh informed that the drug haul seized in 2022 was 3 times more than that seized in the previous year.

Police contemplating to give narcotic drug detection machines to courier operators

Goa police is contemplating of giving narcotic drug detection machines to courier service operators in the state to keep a check on inflow of drugs through parcels, informed DGP. Citing recent case of 74-year British national who used courier service to transport drugs from Pernem, DGP asked the operators to be alert and be on lookout for suspicious behavior and activity. Asking the operators to be eyes and ears of the police, DGP assured them that their names will not be disclosed. He also warned that if drugs business increases in Goa, good tourists will not come to the state.
