Goa govt has moved Supreme Court on ST reservation, says Tawadkar; hopeful of order before next High Court hearing

    SUPREME COURT

Goa government has officially filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s interim order that halted the notification of the estimated Scheduled Tribe (ST) population today, informed Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar. Tawadkar who was part of the delegation which met Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta in New Delhi yesterday, stated that the petition was moved to remove the legal bottleneck stalling the reservation process. HC had earlier restrained the Census Commissioner from issuing the ST population figures, putting the reservation of Assembly seats for STs ahead of the 2027 elections on hold.Tawadkar maintained that there are no major hurdles in the case. He further expressed confidence that the apex court will take up the matter and deliver a favourable order within the next 8 to 15 days. He opined that the Supreme Court order will come ahead of the High Court’s next hearing in the matter, scheduled on November 25. Tawadkar further went on to inform that the Central Govt as well as the ST Community Association will also file related petitions in the Supreme Court.
