High Court has reserved for Thursday its order on interim relief seeking a stay on the implementation and operation of the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Act, 2025, pending disposal of a petition challenging its constitutional validity. The petitioner has also sought to restrain the Census Commissioner of India from notifying the estimated ST population in Goa, contending that such notification would trigger a statutory bar on questioning the figures. The petitioner argues that determining the ST population through estimation and using it to readjust Assembly representation is contrary to constitutional provisions and court rulings. According to the petition, readjustment must be based on the published 2001 Census figures or figures from the forthcoming Census, rather than an estimate or formula.
