Digital Goa, June 12 – More than 70% of the over 365 accident deaths recorded annually in Goa involve victims who were not at fault, CM Pramod Sawant revealed. He attributed the toll to causes like drunken driving and inexperienced rent-a-car or rent-a-bike drivers unfamiliar with Goan roads and traffic rules. Uninformed tourists and migrants often add to the problem, he added.
Pointing out that Goa has the highest people-to-vehicle ratio in the country, CM stressed the urgent need to strengthen public transport to reduce number of vehicles on Goan roads. Key initiatives proposed include expanding the Mhaji Bus network, deploying KTC buses on internal roads, and introducing services connecting industrial estates, villages, and major towns.
Elevated overbridge proposed at Verna junction
To reduce congestion, at Verna junction, an elevated overbridge has been proposed following a joint inspection by the PWD and traffic cell, informed CM. Speaking on enforcement, he said only PSIs and PIs with body cameras will be authorised to issue challans. Smart traffic signals with integrated CCTV cameras are in the pipeline to detect and deter violations effectively, he added.
